Application for Certificate Course

The Blended Learning Program at NUPOC

Students attending the Blended Learning Program for Orthotics or Prosthetics participate in six months of online coursework followed by ten weeks of on-site, clinical work. The online portion of the course consists of both live and streamed lectures, discussion groups, case study groups, and live chat sessions and videoconferencing, in addition to readings, assignments, quizzes and tests. During the clinical portion of the course, students will participate in various labs to gain knowledge of materials, fabrication and fitting.

Tuition is currently $14,388 for each term and is subject to change.

All participants are required to attend a four-day orientation before their program begins.

Students attending the Blended Learning Program are required to have:

  • a PC laptop (optimal) or desktop running Windows (preferably XP if you still have or can get it)*
  • Internet Explorer v. 6.0 or greater
  • Windows Media Player v. 9.0 or greater
  • a high-speed internet connection providing an upstream speed of 384 kbps or greater
  • Microsoft Office, including at least Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (available free from Adobe)
  • proficiency with above software, as well as navigating the Internet, using e-mail, instant messaging, discussion boards (threaded discussions) and chat tools

    *Students using a Mac computer should be aware that Northwestern University primarily uses PCs. If you need to use a Mac for this program, you will need to purchase and install Parallels for Mac, and put a Windows operating system on the second boot option. Please see an Apple/Mac support person for details.

Students with laptops are asked to bring them to orientation so that we can assist with the configuration of videoconferencing software on your computer.

Prerequisites for Prosthetics and Orthotics Certificate Courses
All applications materials, including reference letters and transcripts, should be sent together as one complete packet. Incomplete packets will not be accepted.

1) Official University Transcripts
Send in a sealed envelope an official university/college transcript from each school attended

 Degree: A minimum of a four-year baccalaureate degree (BS, BA)
(International equivalency may be assessed with World Education Service:
 www.wes.org/ca)

  • Prerequisite courses:
    • - biology
    • - chemistry
    • - physics
    • - psychology
    • - algebra or higher math
    • - human anatomy
    • - human physiology

Three semester hours or their equivalent are recommended for each course. If a combined human anatomy and physiology class is taken, six semester hours is recommended. It is further recommended that a gross human anatomy course with a dissection lab be taken, if available. A minimum grade of C is required for all prerequisite courses. Recommended experience: Applications are looked upon more favorably when actual prosthetic and or orthotic experience has been attained. We suggest that applicants gain as much experience as they can prior to attending the program. Experience is recommended however there is no minimum time requirement to apply. Students can find a list of ABC certified practitioners and accredited laboratories at the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics website at www.abcop.org. It is recommended that students develop and continue an affiliation with a laboratory near them to enhance their educational experience throughout the program.

 2) Two Letters of Recommendation
Two Letters of Recommendation are required from clinical professionals such as a certified O & P practitioner, physician, or allied health professional such as a physical therapist or occupational therapist.  Forms are downloadable below.

3) Written Essay
Write an essay describing why you wish to enter the program and profession of O & P.

4) Northwestern Application
An application for the certificate course is downloadable below as a PDF document. The application can be filled out using Adobe Acrobat, printed and mailed in with your application fee. We do not accept faxed applications.
