Dale Yasukawa Award Discontinued
After 14 years of annual scholarships that were awarded to a full-time NUPOC Prosthetics and Orthotics student, the Dale Yasukawa Award is discontinued in 2020 due to a depletion of funds. A primary goal of the $1,000 merit-based scholarship was to defray registration costs at local or annual meetings of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) and to purchase books, supplies, and equipment for recipients' NUPOC studies.
In November 2001, Linda Yasukawa, PT, MS, was instrumental in establishing the Dale Yasukawa Memorial Fund and the Orthotic and Prosthetic Activities Foundation (OPAF) administered the funds and the scholarship.
Although the Dale Yasukawa scholarship is no longer available, the importance of this competitive award for the recipients cannot be exaggerated. Echoing many Yasukawa awardees’ appreciation, recipient of the final Yasukawa Scholarship, Nicolette Chamberlain-Simon, said, “I plan to use the award to attend the Midwest Chapter meeting in Lake Geneva and the 2020 Academy Scientific Meeting in Chicago. This financial support is important to me because I am paying for graduate school, working a part-time job and I have undergraduate loans. I am grateful to be selected as the 2019 recipient of the Yasukawa Scholarship.”
Dale Yasukawa, a Life of Service to P&O
Mr. Yasukawa died on November 22, 2001 at the age of 43. At the time of his death, he was director of prosthetics at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) in the Department of Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinical Services. In 1991 Mr. Yasukawa attended the Northwestern University Prosthetics Certificate program and became an ABC-certified prosthetist in 1993. Throughout his career worked with patients of all ages. For more than seven years, Mr. Yasukawa was prominently involved in the Midwest Chapter of the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists, completing his service as immediate past president in 2001.
Mr. Yasukawa’s service to the profession of P&O continued posthumously through 2019 with the annual conferral of the Yasukawa Scholarship to a NUPOC student. This award benefited our students academically and professionally. In memory of Mr. Yasukawa, NUPOC and all the Yasukawa Scholarship recipients deeply appreciate the generosity of Ms. Yasukawa and OPAF for years of valuable support.
