Continuing Education
NUPOC offers intensive continuing education and postgraduate courses to rehabilitation professionals who serve persons with physical disabilities, including physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists, and pedorthists. Our continuing education instruction offers both fundamental and advanced training, emphasizes new techniques, and explores current concepts of treatment. Attendees are required to comply with Northwestern University’s COVID-19 protocols in addition to any additional local guidance from the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago.
Prosthetics-Orthotics for Physicians & Therapists
Date: April 11-14, 2023
Prosthetics-Orthotics for Physicians & Therapists is a comprehensive four-day course that covers the essential knowledge and skills needed to collaborate with an interprofessional clinical team providing orthotic & prosthetic care. Engaging lectures and interactive clinical experiences featuring actual patients provides a review of pathologies, patient assessment, prescription development, and biomechanics needed to treat patients that require upper and lower limb prosthetic care in addition to orthotic management of the head/trunk/spine, upper limb, and lower limb. Our distinguished course faculty is comprised of board-certified physiatrists, surgeons, physical/occupational therapists, and prosthetist/orthotists engaged in education, clinical practice, and research. The course includes an extensive digital manual that will be available for download.

- Pre-prosthetic and post-amputation care
- Normal human locomotion
- Upper limb prosthetic management
- Partial foot prosthetic management
- Transtibial and transfemoral prosthetic management
- Prosthetic management of hip disarticulation and hemipelvectomy
- Pathologic gait and pedorthic management
- Ankle-Foot (AFO) & Knee-Ankle-Foot (KAFO) Orthoses
- Orthotic management of acute spinal pathologies and deformities
